We visited the urban standard on Gloucester Road on a rainy Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t the plan to go there, we actually had a different café in mind but we were hungry and needed to take shelter so thought we’d give it a try.
The staff were attentive and pleasant, we ordered our drinks at the bar, my husband’s bottle of Coke was brought over pretty much straight away however I was still waiting for my coffee for a while. I had to enquire about it at the bar in the end, they were very apologetic and it was a busy Saturday so we’ll let them off!
They have a very appealing menu, lots of brunch options that I love. Things like dirty baked beans, full English breakfast and quite a good selection of grilled sandwiches and burgers. The venue itself is very trendy, I love the wall art and original floor tiles. The tables were nice and large; they are situated alongside the bar with the kitchen pass visible at the rear.
In the end I decided to try a favourite dish of mine, the smashed avocados on sourdough £4.95 with some extras, a poached egg £1 streaky bacon £2 and fried mushrooms £1 It was absolutely delicious. The avocados were crushed with chilli and lime and seasoned well. The sourdough was nice and crisp and the egg poached as I like, with a lovely runny yoke! I would struggle to find anything to be critical about with this dish it was cooked and presented really well.
My husband went for a Cubanos sandwich. Mojo pork with Swiss cheese. Overall he did enjoy it but felt it was under seasoned and a little on the dry side! For a £8.95 sandwich he was expecting something more. He was a little disappointed it was just a grilled sandwich with fries! He said that it had “lost its Mojo”
So it was a tale of 2 halves at this establishment. Great variety on the menu with most dishes being priced reasonably, I would definitely return and try so more dishes from the brunch section, the dirty beans sound quite tempting! Maybe we’ll steer away from the sandwiches next time I think they are slightly over priced for what they are.
