Review – Water Sky, Eastville

We decided to visit the Water Sky Chinese Restaurant in Eastville after  many recommendations from friends over the last few months.  We absolutely love Chinese food and we often have take outs but I can’t remember the last time I visited a Chinese restaurant for a meal.  I have been quite excited about giving this place a try.  We were pre warned that the venue itself was not what you expect from a typical restaurant (its located above a Chinese food warehouse) and that the outer exterior left a lot to be desired, but was reassured that all this would be forgotten once inside.

I visited with friends, on a Thursday evening around 7pm.  We didn’t book but they still had plenty of tables available.  Once we had finally figured out how to get inside the building we found ourselves in a large lobby with a flight of stairs to the side and a shop in front us.  The stairs were followed by yet another flight of stairs however, there is also a lift for public use if you need it.  On entering the restaurants we were greeted by a friendly waiter who  escorted us to a large round table in the centre of an incredibly large dining area, I have to say that this was a very deceivingly large venue!  It was decorated nicely and definitely had an authentic feel to it.  You soon forgot about the shabby urban exterior by the time you are sat at your table.

We opted for the all you can eat menu (why not!) which was very reasonably priced at £17.95.  A large group can choose one sharing dish each at a time from the menu and once you were finished with these move on to the next set.  It was a nice surprise that the meals were cooked fresh for you from the menu as this kind of all you can eat deal usually involves a buffet cart.  The meals were all presented well and portion sizes were suitable for a greedy bunch like us!

To start,  we chose the duck pancakes,  Thai style spare ribs, chicken satay, spring rolls and salt and pepper spare ribs.  I particularly enjoyed the Duck it was delicious and the plum sauce was amazing.  The chicken satay was also another standout dish for me, it had the perfect peanut sauce and chicken was delicate and soft.  A definite must try!

Water Sky Satay

For the next round we went for crispy fried chilli beef, sweet and sour chicken, beef satay, Singapore noodles, lemon chicken and special fried rice.  We couldn’t believe the portion sizes, there was so much food on the table.  The best dish of the bunch was without a doubt the lemon chicken, we even ordered extra portions as it was so delicious!  All the dishes were cooked really well and full of flavour.

Overall I have to say I really rate this place, its very unassuming and not something I would have considered without the recommendations from friends but the food was really tasty and the service was great.  I also think £17.95 for all that food is a real bargain, you can spend much more than that on a 2 course meal in any pub or restaurant, especially in Bristol and not be half as satisfied.  I also liked the menu had a useful guide for ingredients that you may be intolerant to, so you could choose to avoid these dishes if you needed.  For me this is great as milk and dairy are not always my friends.  I would certainly recommend this place and I am eager to return for another visit!
